"Vitamin D deficiency is a global public health issue. About 1 billion people worldwide have vitamin D deficiency, while 50% of the population has vitamin D insufficiency" 1

I had a doctor that was a very keen proponent of vitamin D. He made helped me understand it's importance and I became aware of how much better I felt when it is in the normal range.

Vitamin D helps calcium build stronger bones, regulate the immune and neuromuscular systems and is an important part in the life cycle of human cells. It's sources are sunshine, food and supplements. If you have darker skin, use sun blockers or live in places that are not sunny and/or in the right latitude, you will not be making enough vitamin D on your own. Plant based foods don't provide an abundance of vitamin D, so it would be wise to have your doctor check your vitamin D level and get a supplement if you need one.

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, which means it is best absorbed by taking it after a meal. Foods high in fats like avocados, nuts and seeds increase its absorption even more.

Here are a few vitamin D3 supplements that are vegan: Doctor's Best Vegan D3, Country Life Vegan D3 and MRM Vegan vitamin D.
